Ergonomics
Beacon can provide classes and individual employee ergonomic evaluations for workstations at any client facility/location. The overall goal of an ergonomic analysis is to provide information that will facilitate the development of an environment, which enhances both the individual’s well-being and performance. Beacon’s objective is to generate a comprehensive report that will contain an assessment of the individual in relation to their workstation, identify potentially hazardous conditions, and offer suggestions for improving their workstation. Beacon personnel will conduct each ergonomic assessment using a systematic approach consistent with standard practices, which are sensitive to the user’s needs and the employer’s requirements.
Every year, more workers lose time from work because of repetitive strain disorders or various musculoskeletal injuries. Often times, workstations are poorly designed and place workers in a high-risk category. Employers are increasingly turning to ergonomics to reduce the cost of workers’ compensation claims and lost productivity.
Beacon has been providing ergonomic services for nearly 10 years. Due to the growing demand we have expanded our services by employing a physical therapist, Laurie Macchello, with certification and specialization in ergonomics. Drawing from her background in physical therapy, Laurie has a comprehensive understanding of the human body and the processes that lead to injury. We now offer three levels of ergonomic evaluations:
1. Basic Worksite Visit
This is a concise and effective option when an individualized approach is necessary. This evaluation takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is designed for the low-risk and symptom-free employee. Basic worksite visit is helpful when upgrading office equipment, renovating or relocating. A single page, hand- written summary of recommendations is provided at the time of service.
2. Standard Ergonomic Evaluation
This evaluation is recommended for early intervention for computer users currently experiencing symptoms. The employee is observed and trained on the essentials of proper posture in the workplace and optimum workstation alignment. This generally takes about 45 minutes and a detailed report follows.
3. Extensive Ergonomic Evaluation
This evaluation is designed for workers who are currently symptomatic, employees with workers’ compensation case issues or employees under a physician or therapist’s care. This evaluation takes 75 to 90 minutes and includes an in-depth analysis of the worker and workstation and training of the employee on proper working posture and workstation alignment. A comprehensive report including photos of the employee’s posture and the workstation as well as recommendations for behavioral, postural and ergonomic adaptive devices is provided. Included in this evaluation is a complimentary follow-up visit.
Other services offered by Beacon include:
Ergonomics Training: This is an hour long seminar which provides information on common musculoskeletal injuries seen in the workplace and preventative measures that can be implemented.
Train the Trainer: This includes the above seminar with the addition of on-site ergonomic workstation evaluations for training purposes and a critique of trainers conducting on-site evaluation. This is generally several hours in duration.
OSHA Statement: Ergonomic Programs
"The evidence OSHA has assembled and analyzed indicates that technologically and economically feasible measures are available to significantly reduce exposures to ergonomic risk factors and the risk of developing work related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Many companies that have voluntary implemented ergonomic interventions have demonstrated that effective ergonomic interventions are available to reduce MSDs. Many of these interventions are simple and inexpensive, but nevertheless have a significant effect on the occurrence of work related MSDs. Benefits include substantial savings in workers' compensation costs, increased productivity, and decreased turnover."
